This collection includes photographs of the Tulley family in Edinburgh, Indiana and Independence, Winfield, and Arkansas City, Kansas ranging from circa 1880 to circa 1910 depicting members of the family, including Mark Tulley, Kansas state treasurer (1906-1912).

Biographical Note

Mark Tulley was born to William B. (1814–1902) and Martha J. (Cone) Tulley (1822–1897) on April 2, 1854 in Bartholomew County, Indiana. He lived in Nineveh, Indiana with his parents and siblings, Matthew and Addah (1856–1927), in 1870. Tulley married Mathilda "Tilley" Ellen Huston (1852-1895) on November 2, 1878 in Montgomery County, Kansas and they had at least 5 children: William Huston (1879–1936), Mary Ellen (1881-1958), Margaret M. (1883–1962), and twins Mark Cone (1891–1945), and Ruth B. (1891–1959). The Tulleys lived in Independence, Kansas, Tilley's hometown, where both Mark and Tilley were teachers. Tillie Tulley died in 1895 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence. A year later, Mark Tulley married Emma Logue on November 11, 1896 in Independence. Tulley was active in the Republican Party and served as chairman of the Republican Central Committee and then as state treasurer of Kansas from 1906 to 1912. He died on February 10, 1914 and was buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Indianapolis.

James "Jim" Tulley was born in 1839 in Ohio. He married Sarah J. (Ergenbright) (1839-1922) on August 29, 1858 in Indiana and they had 8 children: Clara, Mary "Mollie," Charles "Charlie," Etta, John, Martha "Mattie" (1871-1946), William "Willie," and Harry. The family lived in Nineveh, Indiana in 1870 and moved to Independence, Kansas by 1880. Tulley worked as a farmer and saloon keeper. Sarah J. Tulley died in 1922 and was buried with her daughter Martha in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Los Angeles, California. James Tully died on September 30, 1917 and was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery with his son-in-law, Thomas Martin.

Martha "Mattie" Tulley was born on September 19, 1871 to Jim (1838-1917) and Sarah J. (Ergenbright) Tulley (1839-1922) in Kansas. She, like her other 3 sisters, was a teacher and she lived in Denver with her sister Mollie and brother-in-law in 1900. Tulley married Thomas Martin and they lived in Los Angeles, California. She died on December 12, 1846 and was buried in Inglewood Park Cemetery in Inglewood, Los Angeles, California.
