Biographical Note

George Harvey Petty was born to Frank M. (1871-1942) and Maggie Jane (Edwards) Petty (1865-1939) on October 23, 1904 in Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana. He had a brother, James Lee (1902-1953) Petty was graduated from the Washington Township School of Henricks County in 1918 and served an apprenticeship with the Caldwell Printery in Indianapolis, Indiana. He began his career with the Typographic Service Company, also in Indianapolis, in 1927 and he continued there for 17 years. Petty married Mildred Irene Blacketor (1908–1995) on September 19, 1931 and they had a son, Donald Foss (1932–1978). As an adult, Petty was a tall man with brown hair and blue eyes. He moved to Colorado, then returned to Indianapolis, working with the Weimer Typesetting Company, interested in typography and calligraphy. Petty was the director of the Design Department at Rogers Typesetting Company. He won the top honor award at the Chicago Book Clinic in 1959. Petty lived in Franklin, Indiana in 1979. He died of pneumonia on January 23, 1989 in Franklin and was buried in Washington Park East Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Frank M. Petty was born May 16, 1871 to James (1824–1892) and Mathilda (Clark) Petty (1832–1906) in Indiana. He had at least 4 siblings: George Washington (1850-1928), Sarah Elizabeth (1854-1936), Henry Smith (1856-1926), and Albert Lee (1861-1952). Petty married Maggie Jane Edwards (1865-1939) on September 12, 1900 in Indianapolis, Indiana and they had 2 sons: George Harvey (1904-1989) and James Lee (1902-1953). Petty owned a grocery store in North Salem, Hendricks County Indiana. Petty died on February 2, 1942 and was buried in Washington Park East Cemetery with his wife and sons.

George Washington Petty was born on December 1, 1850 to James and Mathilda (Clark) Petty. He married Deborah Adaline "Addie" Coleman (1855–1938) on October 29, 1874 in Hendricks County, Indiana and they had at least 8 children. They family had moved to Oklahoma by 1900. He died on November 12, 1928 in Laverne, Oklahoma and was buried in Madison Cemetery in Slapout, Oklahoma.

Sarah Elizabeth Petty was born on February 26, 1854 to James and Mathilda (Clark) Petty. She married John H. Osborn, Jr. (1853–1898) on November 4, 1873 in Hendricks County and they had at least 2 children: Charles Oscar and Bertha. After her husband's death, she was remarried to Samuel S. (Sanford) Craven on January 22, 1908. She died on May 9, 1936 in Hazelwood, Indiana and was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery in Plainfield with her first husband.

Henry Smith Petty was born on December 31, 1856 to James and Mathilda (Clark) Petty in Hendricks County, Indiana. He married Louisa J. Luckebill on May 16, 1878 in Hendricks County and they had 2 children: Louisa (Louise) and Samuel Henry (1887–1959). Petty was a farmer and the family moved to Sycamore, Kansas where they were living in 1880. After the death of his first wife, Petty married Emma D. Webber (1864–1936) on October 5, 1892 in Kansas and they had at least 4 children together: Horace Charles, Jessie M., Edith, and Earl. Emma also had 3 children from a previous marriage, Lillie, May, and Leroy. The family had moved from Kansas to Oklahoma by 1900. Petty died in 1926 and was buried in Perkins Cemetery in Perkins, Oklahoma.

Albert Lee Petty was born on February 8, 1861 James and Mathilda (Clark) Petty in Indiana. He moved to Kansas after 1880. Petty married Barbara Elizabeth Catron (1864–1888) on May 22, 1884 in Independence, Kansas and they had at least 4 children: Gail Bernium (1891-1970), Amy (b. 1893), Grace Mabel (1886-1977), and Lee Roland (1888-1950). He died on February 16, 1952 and was buried in Grandview Cemetery in Neodesha, Kansas.
