This collection includes carte-de-visite and daguerreotype portrait photographs of the Lasselle family from Fort Wayne, Indiana and New Orleans, as well as unknown places, ranging from circa 1841 to 1876, depicting three of Hyacinth Lasselle's children, Charles, Stanislaus, and Marie Louise, and several descendants--Francis J. Lasselle, Sophia A. (Lasselle) Nettlehurst DeWald, Hannah Nettlehurst, Apolline Julie (possibly Blanc, b. 1860), Joseph Wilfrid Sidney Blanc (b. 1862), Mary Frances Cornelia (possibly Blanc, b. 1865), and Caroline Ella Lasselle--in the 1860s-1870s. There are also two images of Hyacinth Lasselle, carte de visite reproductions of his painted miniature portrait from 1812, a photographic print from a daguerreotype of Hyacinth's mother, Theresa Bertholet Lasselle, and a 1844 handwritten note listing the names and physical descriptions of four of his daughters: Malena, Marie Louise, Julia Francis, and Caroline V.

Biographical Note

Hyacinth (Hyacinthe) Lasselle (also spelled Laselle or Lacelle) (1777-1843) a French trader who lived at Fort Wayne, Indiana (1794-1796); various points along the Wabash River (1797-1805); Vincennes, Knox County (1805-1833); and at Logansport, Cass County (1833-1840). He was born February 25, 1777 in what would become Indiana to Jacques "James" (1735–1791) and Therese (Bertholet) Lasselle of Montreal. Hyacinth Lasselle served as a lieutenant in the Indiana Militia (1812) and the U.S. Rangers (1813-1815). He also served as temporary commander of Fort Harrison, near present-day Terre Haute (1814-1815). In 1825, Lasselle was appointed major general in Indiana Militia. He married Julia Bosseron (1787–1840), daughter of Vincennes trader Francis Bosseron, and they had several children including: Hyacinth (1806–1876), Stanislaus (1811–1853), Melanie "Malena" (1813-), Jacques Magloire (1817–1851), Charles B. (1819-1908), Lucien (1822-), Marie Louise (1826-1859), Francoise Julie "Julia Francis" (1828-), and Caroline Victoire (1830-) Lasselle died on January 23, 1843 and was buried in Ninth Street Cemetery in Logansport, Indiana.

Charles B. Lasselle (1819-1908) attended Indiana University in Bloomington (1836-1839) and was a law student under Daniel D. Pratt (1839-1842). He worked as a lawyer in Logansport beginning in 1842 and became the prosecuting attorney in Cass County (1847-1850). Lasselle was elected as a Democratic member of the Indiana House of Representatives (1863-1865) and the Indiana Senate (1869-1871), as well as the mayor of Logansport in the 1880s before serving as the Cass County probate commissioner in the 1890s. Lasselle died on September 27, 1908 and was buried in Ninth Street Cemetery in Logansport.

Stanislaus Lasselle (1811-1853) was publisher of the Logansport Canal Telegraph (1834-1836) and associated with Benjamin Polke in dry goods firm, Lasselle and Polke in Delphi, Carroll County (1837- circa 1842). Lasselle served as lieutenant and captain in the 1st Regiment, Indiana Volunteers in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) with his brother, Jacques. He also participated in the California Gold Rush, and operated dry goods business near San Francisco (1849-1853) until his death on May 21, 1853. He was buried in Ninth Street Cemetery in Logansport.

Hyacinth Lasselle, Jr.(1806-1876) was a lawyer and merchant in Vincennes and Logansport. He and historian John B. Dillon owned the Logansport Telegraph (1836-1849). Lasselle married Nancy Polke (1809–1865) and they had at least 2 children: Lucien (1835–1864) and William Polke (1836–1896). He died in April, 1876 and was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Washington, D.C.

Jacques "James" Magloire Lasselle (1817-1851) attended Indiana University in Bloomington (1834-1836). He became a lawyer and lived in Logansport (1841-1851). Later, he served as a sergeant in the 1st Regiment of Indiana Volunteers during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). After the war, he was a judge of the Cass County Probate Court in 1851. Lasselle died on February 3, 1851 and was buried in Ninth Street Cemetery in Logansport.

Marie Louise Lasselle (1826-1859) was the daughter of Hyacinth and Julia (Bosseron) Lasselle. She married a James Harvey Tucker (1823–1853) on May 7, 1849 and they had a daughter, Julia B. (1850-). They lived in Logansport, Indiana. After her first husband's death, she remarried to Fordus Harrington (1818–1875) on October 26, 1854. She died May 26, 1959 and was buried in Strong Cemetery in Egypt, Jasper County, Indiana.
