Historical Note

Wayne County is located in east central Indiana, United States, on the border of Ohio. The current county seat is Richmond. The first permanent European-American settlers in the area were Quakers from North Carolina, who settled about 1806 near the east fork of the Whitewater River, which would eventually become part of city of Richmond. The county was founded in 1811 from portions of Clark and Dearborn counties and named for General Anthony Wayne.
