Biographical Note

Born in 1809 in Portsea, England, George Winter is one of the most well-known Hoosier artists. He received private training in art before studying at the Royal Academy. Winter immigrated to the United States, moving to New York City where he continued his study of art. He moved westward within a few years, settling in Logansport, Indiana by 1837. The historical significance of Winter's work depicting scenes in Indiana lies in the documentation of the daily life and forced removal of the Potawatomi and Miami peoples from Indiana. Winter died of apoplexy on February 1, 1876 in Lafayette, Indiana.
