This collection includes two volumes of handwritten notes recording the personal library collections of Austin Flint Denny in Indianapolis, Indiana, ranging from 1841 to August 21, 1899. There are 1,075 books listed in “numerical order” and his collection would grow to at least 1,200 before his passing. The titles and authors of the books are listed as well as where and when Denny purchased or received the books.

Biographical Note

Austin Flint Denny was born on July 6, 1841 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Theodore Vernon Denny and Elizabeth (McLaughlin) Denny. A lifelong Indianapolis resident, except for his time attending Harvard University Law School, he returned home to practice as an attorney, until his retirement in the early 1910s. Denny married twice and both marriages were without children. His first marriage was to Mary Keehen on January 7, 1873, in Marion County, Indiana. After Mary's death, he married Frances Gordon Pim on November 12, 1900, also in Marion County, Indiana. Denny was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and an avid book collector, gathering over 1,200 books and manuscripts. He was a columnist for the Indianapolis Times, writing often during World War One. Denny died on May 19, 1922, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemeteryin Indianapolis. His book collection was donated to Butler University after his passing.
