On April 30, 1789, George Washington took the oath of office as the first President of the United States. Including Washington, 44 men have been elected to the presidency, with one, Grover Cleveland, serving two nonconsecutive terms as the 22nd and 24th President. At the time of publication of the portraits in this collection, Richard Nixon had just been elected the 37th President in 1968.
