Scope and Contents
This collection contains an abstract of title for Lot 178 in the Brookside Sunnygrove Addition located at 2046 North Linwood Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. Created by the Union Title Company of Indianapolis for Lorin Driscoll, the original abstract of title was certified on July 7, 1942 and contains the history of the property from 1821 to 1942. There are three additional sections added to the abstract that contain information about the property found during title searches made for Driscoll Realty, Inc. (May 25, 1946), the Grinslade Construction Company (July 22, 1949), and the Railroadmen's Federal Savings and Loan Association (July 28, 1955). The collection also includes a certified document from Ernest F. Apple, a civil engineer and surveyor, regarding Lot 178 and dated June 4, 1949.

Historical Note
According to Funk & Wagnalls New World Encyclopedia, 2017, an abstract of title is a "brief and orderly statement concerning real property (land), which furnishes a history of the title to be transferred, showing not only the origin and nature of the interest of the seller, but also all encumbrances and other interests, such as mortgages, easements, recorded judgments, and trusts that affect the title." A search regarding the title is usually made by a lawyer or an abstract and title company and the information added to the abstract comes from public records.
