Scope and Contents

This collection includes Wabash College papers and social ephemera, such as dance programs and tickets, as well as letters sent to Herman Clark Wolff in Indianapolis and Crawfordsville, Indiana, ranging from 1898 to 1911, regarding his childhood, family, education, and social life. The correspondents include Wolff's maternal grandfather Julius T. Clark in Topeka, Kansas (1898-1900), his father in Indianapolis (1899), and his future wife, Florence W. Flickinger (1907-1910).

There are also items removed from a scrapbook largely concerning Wabash College student life, including calling and supper cards, wedding invitations, telegrams, letters, a dog license, school papers, a bank balance book, receipts, clippings, Beta Theta Pi papers, orchestera, theater, and travel tickets, and other ephemera (1905-1910). The scrapbook materials include correspondence and appers regarding possible employment with the U.S> Geological Survey.

Biographical Note

Herman Clark Wolff was born May 4, 1890, to Louis H. and Winifred (Clark) Wolff in Topeka, Kansas. He had an older sister, Jessie G. Wolff. His family moved to Indianapolis, Indiana by the time he was 10 years old. Wolff attended Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, as well as Harvard University, and was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He married Florence W. Flickinger on June 23, 1915, in Lake County, Indiana, and they had a daughter, Florence W. Like his father, Wolff became an insurance agent and executive in Indianapolis, Indiana after college. Herman C. Wolff died from lung cancer on January 14, 1955, in Indianapolis.
