Scope and Contents

This collection includes "Dantucker with Speed," a incomplete handwritten poem about the nomination and election of James Polk (circa 1844). On the back of the same paper, there is a poem that begins, "O death within thy ruthless grasp" and a February 7, 1844 receipt from the Indianapolis office of the Sinking Fund for Asa Anderson and Esquire Ward regarding payment of interest on a loan. The collection also has a February 28, 1846 "Penmanship" receipt and includes a pencil drawing of a woman on the back of the receipt.

There is also an oversize document, an October 10, 1837 indenture between James Siddall and Christopher Hare regarding Lot number 40 in the addition north of the town of Madison, Indiana. The indenture was signed by James and his wife, Hannah (OB029).

Biographical Note

James Siddall was born on October 23, 1801 in Stalybridge, England and immigrated to the United States in 1816. He married Hannah Wagstaff (1807-1874) in Wilmington, Delaware on August 17, 1823 and they moved to Madison, Indiana in 1836. Siddall passed away at the age of 72 on August 19, 1874.
