Biographical Note
Wilfred Hickam, M.D., was born on December 25, 1856 in Owen County, Indiana. He
began his study of medicine in the office of Dr. Schell of Spencer, Indiana, and in 1883
graduated from the Medical College of Indiana located in Indianapolis. He began
practicing medicine at Newark in Greene County, Indiana for a short time and then in
Freedom, Indiana for several years. While in Freedom, Hickam was elected Auditor of
Owen County and at the expiration of his term of office he resumed practicing medicine
in Spencer, Indiana. While in Spencer, Dr. Hickam was considered one of the leaders in
his profession and he was also a member of the Owen County Medical Association for
twenty years. Dr. Hickam died in Spencer on November 22, 1904 from cancer of the
stomach.
