Scope and Contents

This collection includes one free permit to hunt, fish, and trap without a license issued to David J. McCormick, dated July 21, 1928, by the Indiana Department of Conservation, Division of Fish and Game. This special free permit, "issued only to honorably discharged ex-service men residents of Indiana" was issued to the 79-year-old McCormick as a discharged veteran of the Spanish-American War.

Biographical Note

David Isaac McCormick was born to Joseph and Mary Elizabeth (Hickmanin) McCormick in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 4, 1849. When he was 19, he joined the Union Army as a part of the 159th Indiana Infantry Regiment, serving in the last year of the war. McCormick stayed on with the National Guard after war ended and also worked on railroads, in factories, and as an experienced stonecutter. McCormick married Jennie Clay Myers on July 31, 1872, and the couple had four children: Mary Kathryn, Roscoe Elmer, Samuel Eli, and Frederick “Fred” Evanson. During the Spanish-American War, McCormick enlised with the 159th Indiana Regiment and eventually achieved a rank of second lieutenant while in the military. In the National Guard, he was eventually promoted to the rank of major. McCormick was a Freemason and avid flag enthusiast, eventually appointed as commissioner of the Indiana Battle Flags Commission from 1909 until his death. He cared for the flags of Indiana and Civil War flags and regimental banners. McCormick died on February 15, 1937, and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis.

Historical Note

The Indiana Department of Conservation, the predecessor of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), was authorized by the 71st Session of the Indiana General Assembly during the 1910s. Enforcement of fish and game laws were placed directly under the department's director, a subordination which continued until 1932 when the responsibility was transferred to the department's Division of Fish and Game. Today, he Bureau of Water and Mineral Resources oversees fish, wildlife, and outdoor recreation while the enforcement of fish and game laws is the responsibility of a cooperating Bureau of Law Enforcement and Administration, another part of the Department of Natural Resources.
