Organizational Note

Until 1915, the Marion Country Guardians’ Home was located at 5751 University Avenue in Irvington, Indiana (now Indianapolis). Under the law governing the home, Marion County paid the bills of the institution while the board of the Guardians’ Home exercised direct supervision. The purpose of the home was to provide short-term care for dependent and neglected children, an early version of the Indiana Department of Child Services. The program, which started in April of 1889, would last over a century, and the last child who attended the home completed the program in 2009.
