This collection includes one handwritten fragment of the New Garden Friends monthly meeting minutes taken by Thomas Parkind, the clerk of the meeting, in Indiana on June 19, 1833. One of the causes for the monthly meeting was to certify that John Hans was a member of its society and that he was an eligible bachelor "clear of marriage engagements with others."

Historical Note
The New Garden Friends have been a Quaker religious group in operation since 1754, in New Garden, Indiana. Originally called the Nebo Monthly Meeting, the fragment shows that a bachelor is able to marry a woman in the community because his original marriage ties have been nullified.
