Biographical Note
James Madison Gregg was born to John A. and Elizabeth (Booth) Gregg in Patrick County, Virginia on June 26, 1806. Gregg was an attorney in Virginia before moving to Indiana in 1830. His brother Martin moved to Indiana as well. Gregg married Matilda Matlock on December 11, 1835 in Hendricks County, Indiana and they had ten children, nine of whom survived into adulthood: William P, George, Sarah, Elizabeth D., James Madison, Jr., Martin, Washinton, Edward M., David, and Virginia.
While working as a lawyer, Gregg also served as surveyor of Hendricks County, Indiana (1834-1945) and clerck of the Hendricks County Circuit Court (1837-1845)A Democrat, Gregg was elected as U.S. congressman of Indiana's 6th District, serving from 1857 to 1859. He also served one term in the Indiana House of Representatives, elected in 1862. James M. Gregg died on June 16, 1869 in Danville, Indiana and is buried there in Danville South Cemetery.
