Scope and Contents

This collection includes newspaper clippings, scrapbook pages, correspondence, and other documents from Laurel Conwell Thayer ranging from 1862 to 1943. Correspondence includes letters to Laurel Conwell Thayer's mother, Maria Conwell Thayer, primarily from her niece Elisabeth Conwell Wilson, but also other correspondents. Also included is a letter from Laurel's father, William Wild Thayer and letters to Laurel Conwell Thayer from Virginia Brooks of West Hammond, Indiana. Other documents include material written by Laurel Conwell Thayer regarding adult probation and court events in Marion County, Indiana and biographical material about William Wild Thayer. Materials date from 1862-1943.

Biographical Note

Laurel Conwell Thayer was born in Indianapolis in 1873. She graduated from Indiana University 1899 and served as a women's adult probation officer of the Indianapolis City Court in the 1920s. In 1925, Thayer "solicited the cooperation of the Indianapolis Bar Association in studying the situation, congestion in the court having made probation work more difficult and more complicated under the then existing system" (Indiana University Alumni Quarterly, 1927). She passed away in 1944.
