Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence, legal documents, receipts, and military papers ranging from 1834 to 1918 regarding Thomas Redding's legal practice in Henry County and Central Indiana. The legal documents in the collection consist of bills, promissory notes, checks, receipts, accounts, indentures, contracts, leases, deeds, mortgages, insurance policies, affidavits, wills, briefs, and other papers relating to a probate business. In addition to the papers from his legal practice, the collection contains insurance papers, correspondence, and account records regarding Redding's map business. The collection also contains Civil War pension correspondence (1862-1887) and some Indiana regimental records (1863-1865). Most pension correspondence is filed together, but some letters are filed with Redding's other correspondence. Patents, drawings, sketches, and technical specifications relating to patent inquiries, claims, and disputes are included as well.

Biographical Note

Thomas Burton Redding was born in Henry County, Indiana on December 27, 1831. The son of Iredell and Anna (Nixon) Redding, Thomas graduated from Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University) in 1857 and obtained a Ph.D. from Iowa Wesleyan University in 1881. Redding married Sarah W. Corrington (1831-1887) on December 2, 1858 and they had 3 daughters.

Redding taught at New Castle Seminary and worked as editor of the New Castle Courier before being admitted to the bar in 1857. He worked as an attorney for a brief time in Chicago, Illinois (1858-1860) and then returned to practice law in New Castle, Indiana. Redding specialized in collections, Civil War pension claims, and patents. In addition to his legal practice, Redding printed and sold county maps in Henry County and Racine, Wisconsin. He served as a trustee of DePauw University, was an active member of the Western Association of Writers, the American Society of Microscopy, the Royal Microscopical Society of England, and other scientific organizations. Redding died in New Castle on April 11, 1895.
