Biographical Note
Harvey Miles Appleman was born September 28, 1872 in La Grange County, Indiana to Squire H. and Viola Ryan Appleman. He was the elder of two children. He taught school until he was nearly 20, then moved to California and worked there for some time, at a ranch and lumber mill. Mr. Appleman married Rose Danielson, also a teacher, on Oct. 22, 1898 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. They had three children, Leo (later called Robert), Rachel and a daughter who was stillborn, in 1909. Rose died three weeks later. He married Florence Scott, also a teacher, June 15, 1912 in St. Joseph County, Indiana. They had one daughter, Jane. Florence died August 1, 1930, after surgery for appendicitis.
Mr. Appleman attended Terre Haute Teachers College, Purdue University, the University of Chicago, Notre Dame University, and Ohio State University. He taught at public school in South Bend and Indianapolis, IN and in Columbus, Ohio. Mr. Appleman also served as school principal in a number of Indiana communities including Lewis, Monon, South Milford, and Shipshewana and at Manual Training School in Indianapolis, IN. He worked as the Assistant State Vocational Director in charge of Trades and Industries and later at South Bend Lathe Works. He taught engineering drawing for Ohio State University.
He moved to his son's farm in Boyds, Maryland when he retired and died there May 26, 1961. He is buried in Highland Cemetery, South Bend, Indiana.
