Biographical Note
Clara M. Frisz was born to Joseph and Marguerite Frisz in 1883 in Indiana. She grew up in Harrison Township, Terre Haute, Indiana and her father worked as a grocer. Frisz married Charles R. Duffin on November 15, 1911 and they had one son. Charles R. Duffin later passed away and by 1930, Clara Frisz Duffin and her son were living with her brother, Dr. Joseph Frisz, in Terre Haute.
St. Joseph's Academy was a private Catholic school conducted by the Sisters of Providence in Terre Haute, Indiana. The order of Sisters of Providence, founded by Blessed Mother Theodore Guerin (Saint Theodora Guerin, 2006), is most visible in Indiana through its St. Mary-of-the-Woods College; but, at its peak, members of the order operated 140 schools and convents throughout the United States. The order was offering parochial and elementary instruction at the end of the 19th century.
