Biographical / Historical
Marion County, Indiana was established by the State Legislature on December 31, 1821. The first county officers were elected in April 1822 and in August of that year, the newly elected board advertised for bids for the construction of a courthouse. The contract was awarded to James Paxton and John E. Baker for $13, 996 and construction was to begin by April 1, 1823. Completed in 1825, the building was also used as the State House until a new capitol building was completed in 1835. The brick and frame building was torn down in 1870 to make room for the construction of a new and much larger courthouse.
