Scope and Contents

This collection includes a typewritten manuscript by Thomas D. Brumett titled, "A Short History of Schools in the North Spencer County Area" (July 1976). The manuscript is divided into seven sections and relates the history of the schools of Carter, Clay, Jackson, Huff, North Hammond, Grass, and Harrison Townships and the North Spencer County School Corporation. Four appendices list the names of students graduating from Dale High School (1909-1972), Gentryville High School (1915-1947), Chrisney High School (1911-1972), and Heritage Hills High School (1973-1975).

Biographical / Historical

Thomas Dizney Brumett was born on April 21, 1924 at Carlisle, Sullivan County, Indiana to Harry and Daisey Brumett. He served in the United States Navy from January 1943 to November 1945 during World War II and married Marian Ogle in San Franciso on April 2, 1945. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Indiana State Teachers College (now Indiana State University) and also studied an extra year at Indiana University to qualify for a school superintendent's license. He taught school in Kinmundy, Illinois and was an administrator for Fulton and Cass County, Indiana schools before becoming North Spencer County School Corporation's first superintendent in 1965. He continued in this position until his retirement in 1990 and passed away the following year at the age of 67 on October 22, 1991.
