Scope and Contents
This collection contains photocopies of articles written by Rev. Thomas A. Long and printed in the Washington Gazette (Ind.) from March 30 to June 1, 1897 under the title "Recollections of Daviess County Methodists." The series final article was to be Rev. Long's personal account of his life, but he passed away a few days before it was to be published. Included in the collection is this final article that was printed in the June 5, 1897 Washington Gazette under the heading “Death Ends the Noble Career of a Man Who Was Loved and Honored by Everybody” and was used as part of an obituary and tribute to Rev. Long.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas A. Long was born on November 15, 1832 in Hawkins County, Tennessee to William and Mary Long. He moved with his family to Daviess County, Indiana when he was about 10 years old. He attended college at South Hanover, Indiana and was licensed as a Methodist minister in 1855. He married Sarah Jane Batchelor on September 14, 1854 and they had several children. Following Sarah Jane's death in 1864, Rev. Long married Mary Batchelor, Sarah's sister, and they had four children. He celebrated his 40th year of ministry in 1895 and passed away two years later at the age of 65 on May 30, 1897.
