Scope and Contents

This collection consists of photocopies of three letters from or about James McLaughlin ranging from 1863 to 1865, during his military service in the U.S. Civil War. The first letter dated May 11, 1863 is a handwritten transcription of McLaughlin's missive to his father and wife, Phebe, concerning running the blockage at Vicksburg. The second document is communication from Major J.C. Robinson at Raleigh, North Carollina, dated April 24, 1864, to the trustees of the 3rd Ward, Zanesville, Ohio, certifying that Sgt. James McLaughlin, D Company, 78th Ohio Volunteers, is "credited to your ward." The last letter, dated April 24, 1865, was sent by Mclaughlin in Raleigh, North Carolina, to his wife, Phebe A. McLaughlin.

Biographical Note

James McLaughlin was born on October 31, 1832, and died November 3, 1871. He served in the 78th Ohio Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. His wife Phebe Ann McLaughlin was born December 26, 1840, and died April 20, 1891. They are both buried in Zanesville, Ohio.
