Administrative History

The Little Elkhart Temperance Society was a religious temperance organization, which existed from 1847 to at least 1853, in Elkhart, Indiana. The group was vehemently opposed to the use of alcohol in most forms and abhorred the misery caused by its addiction. The organization's members agreed "to abstain from entirely from the use of all kinds of distilled spirits and wine except as a medicine in case of bodily infirmity or as in ordinance in the Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and also to use all lawful means to discourage the making and use of the same." The society was part of larger national movement which combined concern for social issues with religious sentiment and health considerations and appealed to many middle-class reformers, especially women, who were particularly vulnerable to the reprecussions of their male family members' alcoholism.
