Scope and Contents

This collection includes two V-mail letters sent by Daniel Lake to his family while serving in Europe during World War II. The first letter is dated July 21, 1944 and was sent to his wife, Bonnie, while she was living in Winchester, Indiana. The second letter was also written in July 1944 and sent to his mother, Mrs. J. B. McCowan, and his stepfather at Somerset, Kentucky. The collection also includes a circa 1944 photograph of Daniel and Bonnie and a newspaper clipping from the October 24, 1944 Palladium-Item (Richmond, Indiana) of the announcement of Lake's death by the War Department.

Biographical Note

Daniel Lake was born August 27, 1911 at McKee, Jackson County, Kentucky to Green and Minnie (Angel) Lake. He married his wife, Bonnie, around 1940. In October 1943, Lake enlisted as a private in the U.S. Army during World War II. While he was overseas, Bonnie temporarily moved to Winchester, Indiana and worked at the Anchor Hocking Corporation. According to Jennifer Bussell, Lake's niece and the donor of this collection, Lake was killed in action on July 29, 1944 at Saint-Lô, France.
