Scope and Contents
This collection includes a typewritten copy of an article published in the February 25, 1930 Indianapolis News that was written by Blanche Stillson about two portraits of Dr. and Mrs. C. G. McLean that were given to the Herron Art Institute. The article relates Dr. McLean's background and the history of the McLean Female Institute, a seminary for women in Indianapolis that operated for about 15 years before closing shortly after the U.S. Civil War. The article also discusses Jacob Cox and Rembrandt Peale, the artists credited with painting the portraits. The collection includes a half sheet of paper with handwritten notes, possibly written by Miss Stillson, regarding the McLean Seminary.

Biographical Note
Blanche Stillson was born June 6, 1889 in Indianapolis, Indiana to Dr. Joseph O. and Mathilde (Bisch) Stillson. She graduated from DePauw University in 1911 and attended the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis. Stillson taught art, art history and painting at Shortridge High School, DePauw and Herron. She had several books published and wrote a weekly art appreciation column for the Indianapolis News. Stillson died at the age of 87 on January4, 1977.
