Scope and Contents
This collection includes Henry McCabe Dowling's pocket-size journal containing entries ranging from 1822 to 1824. The journal has a few personal entries including one that mentions the death of a Rev. George W. Snyder on January 3, 1824, but the bulk of the volume contains notes regarding the writings of Horace, Dr. Johnson, John Locke, Milton, Virgil, and others. Several entries are in Latin with accompanying English translations and there is a list of months of the year and days of the week in both English and French. There is also a clipping of the article "A Word to Boys" that was printed in the June 15, 1849 edition of the Weekly Southron, a Jackson, Mississippi newspaper edited by a John Dowling.

Biographical Note
Henry McCabe Dowling was born in April 1805 in Loudon County, Virginia to Daniel and Catherine (McCabe) Dowling. He married Harriet Isabel Haslett in April 1831 and they had one son, Alexander. The family had moved to New Albany, Floyd County, Indiana by 1840 and Dowling set up a medical practice there. Alexander Dowling became a successful lawyer and judge of the Indiana Supreme Court and his son, Henry McCabe Dowling II, also became a lawyer. Henry McCabe Dowling died in January 1852.
