Historical Note
The Midland Railway Company was originally chartered as the Anderson, Lebanon and St. Louis Railroad and began service between Anderson in Madison County and Noblesville in Hamilton County in 1876. The name was changed to the Cleveland, Indiana and St. Louis Railroad in 1882 and then sold under foreclosure in April 1885 and reorganized as the Midland Railway Company. It expanded westward as far as Browns Valley in Montgomery County, a distance of around 74 miles from Anderson. Henry Crawford, owner of the Chicago and South Eastern, acquired the Midland in 1891. The railway continued to have financial difficulties and it was jointly acquired by the Pennsylvania and Big Four railroads at a foreclosure sale in 1902 and began service as the Central Indiana Railway in 1903.
