This collection includes photocopies of an account book kept by Augustin Pursel of Spencer County, Indiana. The account book has two distinct writing styles, with entries written in cursive from 1846 and entries written in block lettering ranging from 1845 to 1853.

Biographical Note

Augustin Pursel (1798-1860) was born in Kentucky. He later moved to Spencer County, Indiana and married Susan Blocher (1804-1885) in April 1827. They lived on a farm in Huff Township and had four children that lived to maturity, including sons Thomas and Christopher. Both sons later spelled the family surname "Purcell." Christopher (1842-1929) married Catherine Dentinger and they had one daughter, Lola Estella (1870-1959). Lola married Christain F. Grass and they had several children, including Clara Catherine. Clara (1907-1989) married Elmer W. Pruess and was the donor of this collection.
