Historical Note

Vigo County, Indiana was organized in 1818 and was named for Francis Vigo, a Revolutionary War hero. Terre Haute was laid out in 1816 and became the county seat. In the fall of 1811, Fort Harrison was built on the east bank of the Wabash River a few miles north of were Terre Haute was later established. In 1816, Abraham Markle arrived at the Fort and soon build a grist mill on Otter Creek in the area later called North Terre Haute. The mill continued to operate until 1938 when it burned down. The Hotel Deming opened in Terre Haute in October 1914. The eight-story structure is still at the corner of 6th and Cherry Street, but the building has been converted to apartments.
