Biographical / Historical
Whitley County was established in 1838 and is located in northeast Indiana. South Whitley, originally named Springfield, is located in Cleveland Township and was platted by Joseph Parrett in 1837. In that same year, Parrett also established the first school in the county in a log cabin on the north bank of the Eel River with ten students. The South Whitley Community Public Library was founded in April 1912 and began serving the community in August 1913. It was located in a room above the post office before property on the corner of Front and Maple streets was purchased in 1919. The library has remained at this location since that time.
