Indiana State Chamber of Commerce letter

 Collection — Folder: S2322
Identifier: S2322

Scope and Contents

This collection includes an August 1, 1949 letter sent by the Indiana State Chamber of Commerce to Indiana Congressman John R. Walsh. The letter was sent in response to an item in Walsh’s July 11 newsletter that stated that there was a lobbying campaign against cooperatives by a "Power Trust" funded by the National Tax Equality Association. The chamber refuted the claims made in the newsletter and asked that Walsh support tax equality. There is no signature, but the initials CAJ above the enclosure notation indicates that Executive Vice-President Clarence A. Jackson was the author of the letter.

Historical Note

The Indiana State Chamber of Commerce was established in 1922 and reorganized in 1939 when it merged with the Inter-Organization Council. Clarence A. Jackson served as the reorganized Chamber’s first executive vice-president and held the position until 1952. The state chamber soon became recognized as the “united voice for Indiana business” and continues today as the largest, broad-based advocacy group in the state, with full-time legislative experts working on behalf of Hoosiers in a number of areas, including tax and public finance, environment and energy, civil justice, and workplace safety.
