Indianapolis News Indiana Authors cards

 Collection — Folder: S2318
Identifier: S2318

Scope and Contents

This collection includes cards from a playing card set of Indiana authors created by the Indianapolis News in circa 1903. The cards feature portraits of thirteen authors along with their year of birth and year of death if the author was deceased. Along with the authors name, the cards list the titles of three of their works. On the reverse side of the card is an image of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument of Indianapolis and words, "The Indianapolis News" printed above the image. The cards are presumed to be part of a set of 52 cards, four for each author, and are numbered 1 to 13 in the following order: Edward Eggleston, James Whitcomb Riley, Lew Wallace, Booth Tarkington, Charles Major, Forceythe Willson, Evaleen Stein, Benjamin S. Parker, Maurice Thompson, Meredith Nicholson, John Clark Ridpath, Sarah T. Bolton, and Jacob P. Dunn. Of the 21 cards in this collection, there are two cards for eight of the authors: Eggleston, Riley, Wallace, Tarkington, Major, Willson, Thompson, and Nicholson. Of the five remaining authors, there is one card each.

Historical Note

The game of Authors was first published in 1861 by G. M. Whipple and A. A. Smith of Salem, Massachusetts. Lacking a strict copyright enforcement of the popular game, other game publishers created numerous variations, including decks concerning other topics such as actors, artists, and inventors. The Authors deck consisted of thirteen sets of four cards, with each card in the set having an image of an author and four of their best-known works listed. Each set of four cards was referred to as a "book" and the object of the game was to collect as many complete sets of "books’ as possible.
