William H. Long Civil War letters

 Collection — Folder: S2300
Identifier: S2300

Scope and Contents

This collection contains 5 letters written by William H. Long in 1863 and sent to his wife, Lucinda, in Henricks County, Indiana while he served with Company B, 117th Indiana Infantry during the U.S. Civil War. The first three letters were written from Camp Carrington in Indianapolis in August and September. The fourth letter was written on October 21, 1863 from Tennessee and mentions he's been ill and was in the hospital. The fifth letter sent to Lucinda is undated and written like a poem from an unknown location. The final item written by William Long is undated and not addressed to his wife but written like a song (a chorus of "hurrah hurrah" is written several times through the text) about fighting for the flag that bears the "stripes and stars."

This collection also includes a partial sheet of paper with a prescription dated August 5, 1866 for "Senega root," "Squill," and "Flowers of Chamomile," with the name Thomas P. Seller (a physican practicing in Hendricks County at that time) written at the bottom. One additional item in the collection is a photocopy of an index card containing Long’s Civil War information with the 117th.
