Scope and Contents

This collection includes a handwritten copy of "Incidents of Methodism in Central Indiana," a manuscript compiled by John Mitchell of Colfax, Indiana circa 1882. The manuscript relates information regarding general conferences, annual conferences, and camp meetings of the Methodist Episcopal Church held from 1831 to 1882 and Mr. Mitchell occasionally offers his personal experiences and insights regarding ministers and the various church meetings.

Biographical Note

John Mitchell was born January 22, 1819 in Champaign County, Ohio to William and Sarah (Myers) Mitchell. In the early fall of 1833 he moved with his family to Montgomery County, Indiana. In November 1845, Mitchell married Mary Rice and they settled in Sugar Creek Township. He became a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1840 and served as the recording steward and trustee of the church for 50 years. Mitchell worked as a contractor for several railroads, owned a prosperous farm, and operated a grain elevator in nearby Colfax. He also served as a justice of the peace for 25 years. The Mitchells never had biological children, but they raised a number of orphaned children. John Mitchell passed away at the age 79 on February 16, 1898.
