Scope and Contents
This collection includes photocopies of a history of the Livonia Presbyterian Church of Washington County, Indiana written by Rev. Samuel E. Barr in 1876. Rev. Barr's "historical review" of the church and of Presbyterianism in the region was written in response to the recommendation by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of the United States that histories of the churches under its care should "be gathered up and presented for reference in future days."

Administrative History
Livonia Presbyterian Church is located in Madison Township, Washington County, Indiana. The church was established in February 1816 at the house of Alex McKinney, Sr. and organized by Rev. Samuel Shannon with thirteen members. The church was first called Bethel, but soon changed its name to Livonia. The early church was served by several ministers, including Rev. Samuel E. Barr, who was minister from 1852 to 1864, then returned in October 1875 and served the church for at least another year. Livonia Presbyterian is still an active congregation and its present church was built in 1856.
