This collection includes a typewritten copy of "Centenary Methodist Church Centennial," an essay written by Gertrude McDaniel in 1966. The essay includes a list of living descendants of the following original trustees of the church: Peter Slaughter, Andrew Wright, and Cyrus Watson. Two other trustees, Joel Rowe and William Gresham, are listed without descendants.

Biographical / Historical

Gertrude E. McDaniel was born on February 3, 1891 in Brooklyn, Indiana to Ira and Sadie (Slaughter) McDaniels. Her mother was the daughter of John and Sarah Slaughter, founding members of the Centenary Methodist Church located between Brooklyn and Waverly in Morgan County. Gertrude was a graduate of Indiana University and taught in the Detroit, Michigan school system for a number of years before retiring in 1957. She returned to Indiana and later became a resident of the Greenwood Teachers' Retirement Home. She passed away at the age of 97 on December 4, 1988.
