Scope and Contents

This collection includes a record book of Joseph G.M. Officer containing entries ranging from 1885 to 1957. It was first used to record the Volga Literary and Debating Society meeting minutes (1885-1889) and then was used by Officer to record marriages and deaths of his previous students and fellow teachers. Other information added to the book include his 1888 essay "Macaulay"; lists of the names of students in spelling classes, days at school and times tardy; lists of visitors to school; and receipts and expenses of old settlers meeting on August 25, 1906. The collection also includes a Lancaster Mills advertisement regarding grinding prices for wheat, buck wheat, and corn that were to take effect February 20, 1867.

Biographical Note

Joseph G.M. Officer was born September 22, 1866 in Smyrna Township, Jefferson County, Indiana to William and Rhoda (Patton) Officer. He attended local schools and received his teachers training at Moores Hill College. Officer taught school for 32 years in many of the small rural schools in Smyrna and Lancaster townships. He married Mary E. Clashman in December 1892. Following Mary's death in 1933, he married Grace (Jeffries) Powell in 1948. He was a member of the Zoar Methodist Church, the Antioch Grange, the Dupont Lodge of Odd Fellows and the Neville's Grove Association. He died at the age of 93 on February 27, 1960.
