Scope and Contents
This collection includes two typewritten transcriptions of the first record book of the First Christian Church of Salem, Indiana and they include the church minutes and membership documentation from 1842 to 1853, the church membership list from 1885, and an index. The first copy was typed in 1959 by Mrs. James G. Berkey and the Christopher Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution contributed it, presumably to the church, in 1960. The second copy was typed by the Washington County Historical Society in 1966 from a typed copy of the orignal records in the possession of the church.

Historical Note
The First Christian Church of Salem in Washington County, Indiana was established on September 10, 1842 with 26 founding members. The church was established by individuals who were trying to get away from denominational traditions and man-made rules and wanted to use the Bible as their only "rule of faith and practice." The congregation was known as the Church of Christ until about 1900.
