Collection — Folder: S2077
Identifier: S2077
Scope and Contents
This collection includes "Events Since the Remodeling and Rededication of Hibernia Church in 1960: Tragedy and Sorrow or a Blessing in Disquise?", an essay written by church historian Mrs. Buford E. (Effie Pearl) Bower in September 1966. The typewritten document details the response of the church and community following the 1965 lightning stike that damaged the more than 100 year old church. The essay includes a 1966 black-and-white photograph of the newly built church building; a newspaper clipping regarding the cornerstone-laying ceremonies; the order of service for the cornerstone ceremony; a list of the church leaders in April 1966; a 1966 list of supplemental information to the 1960 history of the church; a description of the beliefs of the Disciples of Christ and quotes from Alexander Campbell; and a list of servicemen, from the Revolutionary War to World War II, that are buried in Hibernia Cemetery.

Historical Note
Hibernia Christian Church is located in Owen Township, Clark County, Indiana. Though the early history of the church is unclear, a brick church was build to replace a log structure in 1860 and the church celebrated its centennial in November 1960. On May 26, 1965, the church building was struck by lightning and suffered fire damage. The church was torn down in March 1966 and on April 10 the congregation laid a new cornerstone. The new Hibernia Christian Church building was dedicated on June 11, 1967.
