Historical Note

The Markleville East Christian Church can trace its history back to the first Christian Church established near New Columbus in Adams Township, Madison County, Indiana in October 1849. In 1886, Campbellite Christians formed their own church, known as the Church of Christ at New Columbus, and Francis M. Williams was a deacon. In 1890, Williams and his family moved near Markleville and he became interested in establishing a Disciple's Church there. On January 3, 1913 he and his wife bought the abandoned "Church of God" building in Markleville and on February 20, 1913 a group of 25 people met in the old church for the purpose of organizing a Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). A new brick church was built and dedicated on October 3, 1915 and Carl VanWinkle serving as the congregation's first minister. Mrs. Ruth Williams Keesling Dane (1899-1992), the daughter of Francis Williams, was a member of the local chapter of the Daughters of American Colonists (DAC) and was the historian that prepared the history in this collection.
