Scope and Contents

This collection includes the minute book for the Terre Haute Rifles of the Indiana Legion containing entries ranging from 1889 to 1901. The meetings included discussions regarding drilling, rifle practice, parade invitations, drill contests, dances, theatrical fundraising ventures, and other social affairs. Other matters recorded include disciplinary matters, discharges from service and arrests. In March of 1894, "Resolutions of Respect" were declared and recorded for Private George Taylor upon his death and the collection includes a newspaper clipping regarding this recognition.

Historical Note

On March 20, 1889, a group of 23 men calling themselves the Terre Haute Rifles met for the purpose of being mustered into the Indiana Legion. The group was sworn into service by Lt. Colonel Ben C. Wright and the following officers were elected: John W. Ebel, captain; John T. Triche, 1st lieutenant; L.D. Sparks, 2nd lieutenant; and E.M. Cornell, 1st sergeant. In May 1889, the Rifles were assigned as Company B, 1st Regiment Infantry of the Indiana Legion. The Indiana Legion was redesignated the Indiana National Guard on March 5, 1895. On May 12,1898, the company was mustered into service and attached to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division of the Second Army Corps and known as the 159th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War. The company saw no active service and was mustered out on November 23, 1898. The company reorganized on February 27, 1899 and was again mustered into state service with George W. Biegler elected captain.
