Scope and Contents

This collection includes photocopies of sixteen pages from the daybook of Hoffman and Schlosser of Attica, Indiana. The pages copied range from October 31 to December 21, 1835. The collection also includes a typewritten list of approximately seventy five different items, such as "1 pr. boots," "1 phial pepermint," "1 needle case," and "1 doz. herring," copied from an account book of a general store. The undated document also notes that payment was made by "eggs, load of wood, cabbage, etc." Hoffman and Schlosser's original daybook, with entries from October 1835 to October 1836, is housed in our volumes collections as V293.

Biographical note

William Hoffman and Henry C. Schlosser ran a general store in Attica, Indiana in the 1830s. Schlosser and his wife, Lucinda, were both originally from Maryland. Following their move to Indiana, they became the parents of four children: Phocian, Henry G., Josephine E. and William A. Their son Henry G. went on to be a well-known local politician and prosperous farmer.
