Scope and Contents

This collection includes 67 photocopied pages of Samuel F. Mason's Civil War diary containing entries ranging from August 6, 1861 to September 9, 1864 and 1884. The diary includes the names of the men on a muster roll for Company D, 31st Indiana Infantry Regiment; descriptions of the marches, encampments, and battles of the regiment; and miscellaneous entries added later regarding the sale of butter. The collection also includes photocopies of Mason's November 4, 1864 discharge paper, a note card with his military information, and a typewritten transcription of the diary entries from August 6, 1961 to January 6, 1863 made by Dorothy J. Clark in 1968.

Biographical Note

Samuel Finley Mason was born in October 1841 on a farm in Sullivan County, Indiana, the son of Anthony and Mary (Armstrong) Mason. In September 1861, he enlisted in Company D, 31st Indiana Infantry Regiment as a corporal. Promoted to sergeant in October 1861 and 1st lieutenant in February 1863, Mason resigned from service on November 4, 1864. He married Matilda Davis on July 14, 1868 and they had 5 children. In 1879, he moved to the town of Sullivan and engaged in the grocery business with his brother. Mason died on October 11, 1909.
