Scope and Contents

This collection contains postage stamps from the Sullivan Memorial Collection that were sent in January 1941 by George H. Sullivan of New York City to Verne Patty, curator of the Indiana State Museum. The stamps are post marked from 1857 to 1860 and were originally used on correspondence from Sullivan's family members. The collection also includes a photocopy of a February 20, 1941 handwritten note sent by Sullivan to Patty with a rare "City Dispatch" stamp postmarked May 28, 1859; three stamps postmarked in 1861, 1873, 1880; and two stamps from circa 1870s.

Biographical Note

George Hammond Sullivan was born November 20, 1859 in New York City to Algernon S. and Mary M. (Hammond) Sullivan. His father was born in Madison, Indiana and was the son of Jeremiah Sullivan, a justice of the Indiana Supreme Court from 1838 to 1846 and the person credited with suggesting "Indianapolis" as the name of Indiana's new state capital. George was a corporate and tax lawyer for Sullivan and Cromwell, the Wall Street law firm founded by his father in 1879, and was a well-known philanthropist. He passed away at the age of 96 on November 14, 1956.
