Scope and Contents
This collection includes three typescript copies of the judicial business of the Providence Primitive Baptist Church of Gibson County, Indiana. Ranging from 1827 to 1845, the thirty case records consist of charges brought against members of the congregation for various transgressions, including intoxication, immoral conduct and non-attendance, anger and abrupt language, non-payment of debts, and dancing the Virginia reel.

Historical Note
Gibson County, Indiana was established in 1813 and was named for Gen. John Gibson, a soldier in the French and Indian War and Revolutionary War and the second territorial governor of Indiana. The Providence Primitive Baptist Church, located near Francisco, was organized in March 1822 by Elders William Hanks and Alexander Devin and thirteen charter members: Stephen Strickland Sr., Elizabeth Strickland, James Skelton, Joseph Manning, William Putnam, Edy Skelton, Elisha Strickland, Dycia Strickland, Mary Holcomb, Patsy Pierson, Abigail Burchfield, Leah Manning, and Tabetha Reavis.
