Scope and Contents
This collection includes the following items related to Spencer County, Indiana: a two-page handwritten transcription by Caroline E. Pfeifer in circa 1930 of the November 20, 1884, February 5, 1885, and February 13, 1885 minutes from the Bluff City Rebekah Lodge no. 239; a clipping of "An Old Letter," an article published in The Monitor (Grandview, Ind.) on May 21, 1931 that reprinted an August 5, 1822 letter from John Morgan of Rockport to his wife, Mary, and an April 23, 1824 letter to Mary from her sister Elizabeth Ewing of Grayson County, Kentucky; and a May 10, 1943 letter to the Indiana State Library from Ann Harvey regarding the picture of "The Bluffs" at Rockport that was used on the cover of the sheet music for her song "My River Home." Two copies of this sheet music are available in the Indiana State Library pamphlet collection (ISLH 780.8 Harv 1).
This collection also includes a photograph taken in 1940 of two pages from a 1834 school record book from Clay Township; two copies of a picture of Hoffman's Mill Dam with a history of the dam printed on the reverse side from a calendar printed compliments of Benjamin F. Huffman circa 1919; an undated advertising card for Santa Claus Land; and a promotional card with "Lincoln Was a Hoosier" printed above and "Lincoln Memorial to Be Indiana's Tribute" printed below a print of an image of an early proposed design for the memorial by architect Thomas Hibben circa 1928.

Historical Note
Spencer County, Indiana was formed in 1818 from parts of neighboring Perry and Warrick Counties and was named for Captain Spier Spencer, one of the officers killed during the Battle of Tippecanoe. Rockport, the county seat, was also founded in 1818. Other cities and towns in the county include Dale, Chrisney, Grandview and Santa Claus. Spencer County was also the boyhood home of Abraham Lincoln, who lived in the county from 1816 to 1830.
