Scope and Contents

This collection contains a number of items related to Upland, Grant County, Indiana, including undated pamphlets about Upland; a 1931 booklet from the annual homecoming of Arcana Lodge No. 427; a pamphlet printed by the Upland Chamber of Commerce to promote the town’s 1967 centennial celebration; undated pamphlets for the Upland Train Depot Project; a pamphlet about the town's 125th anniversary celebration from September 1992; Upland Area Historical Society newsletters from 2003-2004; water quality report pamphlets from 2004 to 2008; and an undated letter sent to a Ms. A.K. Holcombe from Doris Bugher Sinks requesting information about Jacob Bugher and copies of research documents related to Bugher.

Other items in the collection related to Grant County include Lewis Wallace, Jr.’s stock certificate for the Queen City Electric Railway Company of Marion dated June 30, 1892; , a 1970 pamphlet published by the Indiana and Michigan Electric Company regarding Marion, Indiana; a copy of the historical sketch "Oak Chapel Church: 1876-1976"; two copies of the Indiana Department of Commerce "Wander Indiana" calendar of events for the spring and summer of 1982; a packet of research material, student activities and questions regarding the War of 1812 and the Battle of the Mississinewa from circa 1987; a copy of the July 1992 Historical Gazette, a newsletter printed by the Grant County Historical Society; a pamphlet for the Mississinewa 1812 program in October 2004; and a booklet for the Marion Philharmonic Orchestra's 2005-2006 season.

Historical Note

Grant County, located in north central Indiana, was established in 1831 and named for Captains Samuel and Moses Grant. Marion, the county seat, was founded that same year and was named for Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War general. The town of Upland, home of Taylor University, was laid out by Jacob Bugher in 1867. Other cities and towns in the county include Gas City, Sweetser, Swayzee, and Van Buren.
