Scope and Contents

This collection has several items related to Fountain County, Indiana, including an August 17, 1925 handwritten letter sent by Karl Van Devanter of Veedersburg to Kate Milner Rabb at the Indianapolis Star regarding the preservation of the old state road that was used by pioneers from Cincinnati and other eastern points to travel to the Fountain County; two letters from September 1925 that were sent to Rabb from J. Wesley Whicker of Attica in response to the publication of Van Devanter's letter in the Indianapolis Star; a program from the dedication ceremony of the new courthouse on July 3, 1937; a program from the 25th anniversary of the dedication of the courthouse murals held on October 16, 1965; and an undated notecard with a a pen and ink drawing of the First Methodist Church of Covington printed on the front.

This collection also includes an undated transcription of the articles of association for the Rational Brethren of Oxford, Butler County, Ohio. William Ludlow, one of the founders of the Rational Brethren, moved to Fountain County and used the Brethren's record book when he founded the Coal Creek Community and Church of God in 1825. The original record book is part of the Coal Creek Community and Church of God collection (S2538). Titled "Appendix 1," the typewritten transcription is fourteen pages long and includes text from the first few pages of the articles of association that are missing from the record book.

Biographical / Historical

Fountain County, Indiana was formed in 1826 and Covington, the county seat, was established that same year. The county’s present courthouse was built in 1936-37 and display murals painted by Eugene Francis Savage and others. Other cities and towns in the county include Attica, Veedersburg, Hillsboro, Kingman, Newton, Mellott, and Wallace.
