Scope and Contents

This collection contains copies of the constitution and by-laws of the Indiana Educational League and a May 1, 1891 letter that were sent to city and county school superintendents regarding the formation of the League. The collection also includes typewritten notes regarding the history of the short-lived organization copied in 1927 from clippings in Alexander Knisely’s scrapbook.

Biographical note

Alexander Knisely was born December 12, 1851 on the family farm near Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana, the son of Richard and Amy (Norris) Knisely. He began teaching school when he was about 18 years old and received a bachelor's degree from Northern Indiana Normal School (now Valparaiso University) in 1879. In 1885, he became the superintendent of Whitley County schools and served in the position for 6 years. While superintendent, he introduced the graded system of instruction and made school work uniform throughout the county. He also served on the committee that organized the Indiana Educational League and served as president of the League in Whitley County. He married Mary More on September 6, 1892 and they had 2 children. He later worked as an agent for the Warder, Bushnel and Glessner Comany, manufacturers of Champion Mowers and Binders. He was a skilled mathematician and was an active member of the American Mathematical Society from 1891 until his death on September 28, 1931.
